My Story
About us
Thank you for visiting our page.
2025 sees Deryn and Sami swimming again for Lepra, joined by great friends Barbara and Ethan. We are swimming to raise money for Lepra in memory of Elin. Lepra is a charity that supports people with Leprosy and Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis).
Elin was the most kind, loving and naturally beautiful soul, Deryn's daughter and Ethan's girlfriend. Sadly, she tragically lost her life in January 2022.
Elin wanted to study medicine and was interested in learning more about tropical diseases after listening to a lecture at King's College London, particularly Lymphatic Filariasis (LF).
It is a parasitic disease caused by microscopic thread-like worms, which are transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. This disease affects millions of people worldwide and due to the prejudice attached to the deformities caused by LF, many people affected are often shunned and abandoned by their loved ones when they need help the most. They often lose their ability to work due to the effects of LF. It is the second biggest cause of long-term disability in the world.
Lepra UK use innovative ways to spread health education messages to inform people about LF and treatment. They have developed and teach self-care techniques to people already affected enabling them to reduce fevers and swelling. They also help people to get back to work by providing custom-made shoes and help people form self-help groups to improve their livelihoods.
Swim Serpentine is London’s hugely popular festival of open water swimming where swimmers can take on a variety of distances in Hyde Park’s famous Serpentine lake, ranging from half a mile to six miles. This year we are swimming one whole mile!
Thank you for reading our story and any donations are greatly appreciated! For those that might want to come and cheer us on we'll see you on Saturday 20th September! 🤍🌻🤍
